Interview with The Town on Notice

Describe, in as many or as few words as you see fit, the genesis of or inspiration behind your film.
The Town On Notice is an experimental film based on the original stage production by Dimensions Dance Theater. Visions of Oakland, dynamic choreography, and touches of abstraction combine to show our city’s profound, unique flavor. Diana Cordero, Sonia D. Pina, and Umi Vaughan created this work supported by the Oakland Cultural Funding Program.
What is interesting or intriguing to you about engaging with dance for film vs. dance for stage? Or, if you are coming from a film background and working with dance is a secondary medium for you, what drew you to wanting to capture and work with dance?
We wanted to see if we could take powerful choreography originally conceived for and presented on the concert stage by a great dance company and use it to make a new artistic statement of our own. The entire process of choosing locations to shoot, adapting to the conditions, preparing the dancers, capturing the essence of the choreography while saying something new with our film version was challenging and rewarding.
